Exemple de cours d'Histoire : Athènes au Vème av. J-C (l'invention de la citoyenneté)

Introduction.
The Greeks evolved a unique version of the city-state, which they called the polis. Ancient Greek cities that were not democracies were either oligarchies- where power was in the hands of the few richest citizens- or monarchies, called 'tyrannies' in cases where the sole ruler had usurped power by force rather than inheritance.
The 5th century BC (Before Christ) was the Golden Age of Athenian democracy. Taking pride in its political system and in its recent victory over the Persians, the city decided to use part of the contributions made by its allies to erect a number of religious buildings on its Acropolis.
Guiding questions. Why was Athens considered the ‘birthplace of democracy‘? How was her government organised? What new political values did Athenians believe in? What were its limitations?
